Danielle R. Williams

Virologist, Author, and a PhD student

Hi, my name is Danielle and I am currently a doctoral student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill interested in understanding the evolution of HIV tropism in the central nervous system. I have completed my B.S in Cellular and Molecular Biology from San Diego State University (2018). Shortly after graduation, she moved to Seattle, WA where she spent two years as an NIH PREP Scholar at the University of Washington and studied adenovirus and HIV.

I have spent the last six years studying mindfulness and I use these practices daily to combat severe anxiety and clinical depression, and thrive in a competitive research environment. My goal is to change the academic culture from the inside out, beginning first with self. My motto is, “A better academia begins with a better you.”

Why Mindfulness and Journaling during PhD?

Hundreds of studies in the past have proven the benefits of putting thoughts and feelings on paper. In Academia, we were never taught to take the time or put in the work to define and redefine who we are and what we want in this life.

Result? Anxiety, envy, shame, ego, anger, baggage and a spectrum of negative emotions that push you down.

Being able to train your mind to recognize negative thoughts and triggers, while observing them without being consumed by them is one way to alleviate stress, anxiety, and fear.
That’s what mindfulness does.

It gives you a sense of purpose and helps you find peace and joy from within
