Over the past few months, we’ve helped over ____ women like you to increase their work-life balance, establish a clear purpose, gain confidence and peace of mind while in doctoral programs. This book of mindful exercises and journaling prompts has helped achieve these results.

I grew up taking care of my chronically ill father and lost him to congestive heart failure when I was just 12 years old. While spending copious amounts of time in the hospital, I always wondered why the doctors couldn’t find the root of his illness. I wanted to understand this at the biological level and it is the main reason I began my scientific research journey.
I was required to grow up very quickly, as my mom was a single mom taking care of 2 children. I ignored my childhood trauma for a very long time. However, in college I took a Buddhist psychology course that exposed me to mindfulness and meditation. It was here that I began my mindfulness journey and healing.
As time passed and my path in academic research muddied, I hadn’t practiced mindfulness in years. During my post bac I was diagnosed with severe anxiety and clinical depression. I suffered from constant migraines, blackouts, anxiety attacks, and suicidal dreams. I leaned on therapy and those early mindfulness teachings to heal my mental health.
In addition to therapy and my new love for mediation, my environment had a huge impact on my improved mental health. My mentor helped me remember who I truly am and that I am capable of greatness. With this newly acquired mindset and support of lab mates, I was able to get into my DREAM doctoral program. This is when I knew I was on to something great.
I have spent the last six years studying mindfulness and I now use these practices daily. I believe this is the foundation of my success as a graduate student.
My goal is to change academic culture from the inside out, beginning first with self. I truly believe if each one of us takes responsibility for our own happiness we can transform not only our experience but the experience of those around us.
